Oregon Concealed Handgun License

General Requirements for a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) in Oregon: Be a U.S. citizen. Be at least 21 years old. Be a resident of the county in which you are applying. Not have any outstanding warrants for your arrest. Not be awaiting trial in a criminal matter or currently completing a diversion agreement. Never have been convicted of a felony. Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor within the last four years. Never have been convicted of a crime of domestic violence. Not have been found to be mentally ill under ORS 426.130. Not be subject to a stalking order or restraining order. Not be an unlawful user of, or addicted to, a controlled substance. Complete a handgun safety course.

As a certified pistol instructor, I can teach the Oregon CHL course and issue an official training certificate to use when applying for the Oregon CHL with the County Sheriff.

General Process

Application: Obtain and complete the CHL application form from the relevant county sheriff’s office.

Training: Provide proof of handgun safety training that meets Oregon requirements. Some counties offer their own training courses.

Documentation: Gather required documents, which typically include: Valid photo identification (e.g., driver’s license), Proof of residency (e.g., utility bill), Original or certified copy of birth certificate or US Passport.

Fingerprinting: Many counties require fingerprinting as part of the application process.

Fees: Pay the required application and processing fees.

Background Check: The sheriff’s office will conduct a background check.

Issuance: If all requirements are met and the background check is approved, the CHL will be issued.
